Early Morning Sunrise In Natalie, PA

My husband is a coder, which means he sits at his computer writing stuff that might as well be Cantonese to me. He does all that unseen stuff that makes websites run. Things we all take for granted. Well, this means that many nights, he stays up all night long working. This morning when he was heading to bed around 5:30 he noticed that the sunrise was gorgeous and went out to snap some pics for me. Pics like these make me wish I was morning person! hahaha

The first picture is taken in our back yard and the rest are all taken up in Natalie off the culm bank. Nature is so beautiful!

Cogen In Marion Heights, PA

I took these pics up at the top of rt 54 in Marion Heights PA. I’m standing on the access road to the old landfill facing towards the cogen plant. It was late in the day. Around 6-7 pm and that’s why the trees look so dark. You can see the cogen on the left of the pics. In one you can even see a contrail hanging in the sky from a long past plane.

Double Contrail In Cloudy Sky

This was kind of neat. There was a contrail hanging in the cloudy sky and another plane took the exact same route and left it’s own contrail right above it.
The first pic is of the approaching plane leaving it’s matching contrail and the second is of the two contrails hanging in the sky.

Rt 61 In Mount Carmel Pennsylvania

This highway connects Mount Carmel with the now dead town of Centralia. It is a two lane highway in both directions and as you can see, it receives little use. Mostly just random cars and coal trucks. There are several coal operations along this stretch of road, but no houses or anything. Pretty desolate strip of road. Don’t run out of gas out there or you’ve got a long walk back to town!

Municipal Building Centralia Pennsylvania

Two quick pics of the Municipal Building in Centralia, PA. One of the few remaining structures in a town with an underground mine fire burning beneath it.
The government has bought out and demolished almost every structure in this town. This building is one of the few still standing.

Ukrainian Church Centralia PA

Coal Mining In Gilberton PA

Today I drove out to Gilberton and snapped a few pics of a coal mining operation. It was a little scary out there because that road was super busy and there is no shoulder at all. Huge coal trucks were zipping by as well as tons of cars. I was actually quite surprised at how busy it was.

I love the contrast between the black, dirty coal and the beautiful blue sky. You can see the co-gen plant up at the top of the hill to the right. They burn the coal up there and turn it into power. It’s a dirty process, but necessary I suppose.

I’m planning to go back out there when I have a buddy, so if I get plastered all over the road, someone can dial 911 for me. hahaha

To get an idea of just how big those coal trucks are, you can see a guy standing on the front of one in pic #5. I’m telling you, these things are BIG!

Rt 54 Between Atlas and Marion Heights Pennslyvania

These few pictures of clouds were taken about half way up the hill between Atlas and Marion Heights. There is a coal operation back there somewhere and you can see the dirt and some small piles of stuff that has been left at this entrance point in the foreground.

Pics from the snake road between Ashland and Mount Carmel

Right before the closed section of Rt. 61 between Ashland and Centralia is a road people call “the snake road”. It’s basically a windy, twisty path up and over the mountain. There’s not much up there to speak of. No homes or anything. But there is a relatively new spot where they have begun mining coal. I stopped and snapped these pics at the entrance to that mining operation. You can see some of the equipment in a few pics. It’s amazing how big the dump trucks are they use in the coal mines.

In the distance, you can see the state prison in minersville, named FCI Schuylkill. Also, to the left of that is the Highridge industrial park. Home to many warehouses and businesses employing people in this area.
